Hi all,
So today, Steve decided that he would drive us to the Great Ocean Way which runs along the southern coast of Australia. We drove for about 3 hours next to the Southern Ocean (I guess we call it the Antarctic Ocean). The sandstone cliffs rose magnificently hundreds of feet above the sea. The water was crystal blue with crashing waves, thundering along those cliffs. It was awesome! It remeinded me of California and US 1. Truly a stunning sight. We went to Apollo Bay and had lunch overlooking that cerulean sea. After we walked on the sand a bit, we headed for one of the most phenomenal sights of all, the 12 Apostles. These are sandstone cliffs that stand apart from the mainland. Really spectacular. Next we went to what was a land bridge, called London Bridge, which jutted out into the sea about 2 football fields. You were able to walk out and see the Ocean in all its glory. However, in 1990, some people walked across and just as they got to the end, the middle arch collapsed and they were stranded until a helicopter could rescue them! That is something to tell the grandchildren about, right?
We headed home around 5, and drove through sheep, cattle and horse ranches. The land is so diverse here. Drive for a few minutes and the topography goes from sandstone cliffs and the ocean to arid rolling hills and rural towns. It is all beautiful in its own way. We stopped to visit one of Lil's daughters and had a bit of dinner. I still feel like I am in the car!
Tomorrow we will be going into Melbourne for the last time for a few of the sights I missed and having "high tea" at the famous Windsor Hotel with the infamous "scones" along with cream and jam. Should be fun.
Catch you tomorrow!.
Kerry
