Grey granite monoliths rise 900' from the sea floor until they break the surface of the Tasman Sea, heading straight up toward the cloudless cerulean blue sky, stopping only when these majestic giants are 5800' above the water's edge, towering over everything as silent as sentinels. This is Milford Sound.
It is incongruous that a temperate rainforest which deposits 21 FEET of rain a year and carpets the earth, the forest, and rocks with green spaghnum moss, can grow in the same space as the ice covered peaks of Fiordland National Park. But they do.
The only words I uttered today consistently were "Wow!" and "Wow!" This part of untamed New Zealand in beyond description. All of today's photos were taken in Milford Sound.
Tomorrow I will be going to the east coast and perhaps I can find a different voice.
Love,
Kerry
These pictures are just gorgeous. I, too, was saying "Wow" as I looked at all of the pics before I read your commentary. I am daring to say that this is your best trip yet.
