Photos today include: Werribee Mansion and Gardens, St. Kilda Beach, Rippon Lea House and Gardens, Melbourne Botanical Gardens, 1920 Cable Car and the City Baths.
Today was a spectacular day, no rain in sight. We decided to visit Gardens and old Mansions today. The architecture in Melbourn is Victorian in nature, sometimes the bottom of a building is Victorian with red brick and arches, and then the top is sandstone and more modern. Very beautiful.
First we went to Werribee Mansion and Gardens. A family estate with lovely gardens and 2 weddings going on at the same time. Perfect day for it. The grounds had sloping lawns, singing birds and a breeze. This building was built around the turn of the 20th century.
Next we survyed St. Kilda Beach. I was suddenly homesick! The Pacific was pretty warm, so I stuck a toe in. St. Kilda had a Coney Island type amusment part, called Luna Park with a roller coaster made in, where else?, New York.
We moved on to Rippon Lea House and Gardens, another beautiful old mansion that had 2 weddings. We watched the bride glide gracefully across the emerald lawn while her husband to be could hardly control himself and broke into tears. Not wanting to invade on their privacy, we walked around lakes with mallards and wetlands burds enjoying the ponds and warm weather.
Onward to yet another Victorian home, Como House, named after Lake Como in Italy. The owner purchased the land from the Aboriginal natives The land went right to the Yarro River. Very cool.
We finished the day by going back to some parts of the city that we had been unable to see yesterday like the Royal Botanic Gardens, near the Governor's mansion and we saw limos and Mercedes for yet another wedding. Perhaps they are trying to tell me soemthing? I marveled at the Anzac Shrine, built to commemorate their men and women who lost their lives in the many wars Australia has fought in. We drove past the old National Galley of Art and the New, the 1920's Old Trolley and the City Baths. Finally as we headed home I smiled going over the bridge because the water was glistening. Melbourne is a fantastic city. We may return on Tues. for a few hours and have high tea at the Windsor. Cant wait!
WEll, that is it for now. Tomorrow we are going to see the 12 apostles......
Love,
Kerry
